Welcome to the
Brierley
Residence

Rishton ⬩ United Kingdom

Welcome to our Rishton home.

The Brierley Residence was originally built as a farm house in approximately 1850. Rishton Colliery in Rishton was begun by P.W. Pickup Ltd in late November 1884 and mining continued until 1941. It later served as a pumping station from 1955 until 1970 by NBC. A ginny road from the pit connected to a coaling wharf on the canal. The two shafts at Rishton Pit were filled in August 1991. When they filled in the shafts, they came across a small ginny track running from the number one shaft, some of which still survives and runs beneath the top playground of the Rishton Methodist Primary School.

The ginny track would have originally run down to the canal. The only remaining building on the site now is the Manager’s house and office, this has been converted into residential properties
(Walmsley Cottages).
